Youth Program Volunteer Opportunities
Homework Club
Homework Club is an after-school program for youth grades 1-7. The purpose is to provide a safe, comfortable space for youth to complete homework assignments, get extra help with reading, and do educational activities. Volunteers might help with passing out snacks, assisting children with homework, reading to or with a child or group of children, playing educational games, and writing brief progress notes about the children’s participation and progress. Homework Clubs run throughout the school year and are coordinated by Bienestar staff with the help of volunteers. See below for locations, days and times:
• Sunset Gardens Apartments, Hillsboro Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m.
• Montebello Apartments, Hillsboro Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
• Reedville Apartments, Aloha Monday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
• Jose Arciga Apartments, Forest Grove Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.

Arts & Crafts Class
We need your help in designing and implementing a new art class for children ages 7-12. Classes can be tailored to fit your schedule and materials will be provided by us! A few fun ideas might be doing collages or mosaics, crocheting or knitting, drawing, painting, and photography. Contact us if you are interested in taking the lead in creating and providing an arts or crafts class for our kids!
Basketball/Soccer/Yoga/Dance Clubs
Bienestar provides fun and active learning opportunities for youth to try out new sports and activities. Classes run on a rotating schedule, generally for 8 weeks, and depend on the season, funding and staff availability. Programs are run in Hillsboro, Aloha, Forest Grove, and Cornelius throughout the year. Please contact us to see which class is currently running and get involved!
Summer Lunch, Reading & Activities Program
Join us from mid June to mid August in providing free lunches to children in need (birth to 18 years old). Nutritious lunches are provided through our partnership with the Hillsboro School District. Afterward, staff and volunteers from the community provide structured activities like cultural presentations, arts and crafts classes, sports training, educational games, and the “Go for the Gold” Reading Program for children.
• Montebello Apartments, Hillsboro Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
• Sunset Gardens Apartments, Hillsboro Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Adult Programs Volunteer Opportunities
If you prefer working with adults, we’d be delighted to have your help. Most of our adult residents speak only Spanish, so if you speak Spanish that would be a big plus. We need help with:
Computer Classes
Adults will be learning very basic to intermediate computer skills during evening classes in the computer labs at our properties. Classes run on a rotating schedule, generally for 8 weeks, and depend on staff availability. This would be a great way to learn some new computer vocabulary in Spanish if you already have a good command of the language!
ESL Classes
We are seeking experienced ESL instructors or volunteers willing to learn to help us with ESL classes for limited English speaking adults at various skill levels. Classes are scheduled throughout the year based on resident interest as well as staff and volunteer availability. Contact us if you are interested in teaching a class or being a language partner for an adult student!
GED Classes
Our GED instructor needs volunteers to help adults who are preparing to take their high school equivalency exams. Volunteers would help individuals or small groups with math, science, and writing.
• Sunset Gardens Apartments, Hillsboro Wednesdays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Family Programs
Volunteers are needed to help Spanish speakers learn English. Day and evening classes are running in Aloha and Hillsboro.
